About IGAD Water Unit

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) established the Water Unit to address the region's significant water scarcity issues, particularly in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL). Water is a crucial resource in the IGAD region, essential for poverty reduction, economic growth, and environmental sustainability. The Water Unit coordinates and facilitates joint programs for sustainable water management, with a focus on transboundary water resources, which are critical to regional stability and development.

The mission of the Water Unit is to promote peace, stability, and socio-economic development through the efficient and effective management and governance of water resources in the IGAD region.

The vision is to achieve sustainable management and equitable use of water resources in the IGAD region, contributing to socio-economic development, peace, and regional integration.

Our Goal and Objective on Groundwater

The primary goal is to enhance the sustainable management of water resources, particularly transboundary water systems, to support socio-economic development and regional stability in the IGAD region.

The key objective is to strengthen regional capacity, information systems, and collaboration for sustainable water management, with a focus on transboundary resources.
